Japanese: コゴメウツギ - こごめうつぎ

A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family commonly found on hills and mountains (illustration). The trunk is grayish white, clump-growing, well-branched, and less than 1m tall. The leaves are ovate with long, pointed tips, shallowly or half-lobed edges, and soft hairs on both sides. The flowers bloom in racemes around May, with five white, broadly ovate petals and ten stamens. The fruit is a small, spherical capsule that splits when ripe. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as in mainland China. It is often found in areas of serpentine and limestone.

丘や山地によく見られるバラ科の落葉低木（イラスト）。幹は灰白色になり，叢生（そうせい）して，よく枝分れをし，高さは1m以下。葉は卵形で，先は長くとがり，ふちは浅くまたは中ほどまで裂け，両面とも軟らかい毛がある。花は，5月ごろに，総状花序をなして咲き，花弁は5枚で，白く広卵形，おしべは10本。果実は袋果で小さくて球形，熟すると裂ける。北海道から九州まで，また中国大陸にも分布する。蛇紋岩や石灰岩地帯に多く見られる。
