Deutzia nigra - Deutzia nigra
A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family commonly found on hills and mountains (illustration). The trunk is grayish white, clump-growing, well-branched, and less than 1m tall. The leaves are ovate with long, pointed tips, shallowly or half-lobed edges, and soft hairs on both sides. The flowers bloom in racemes around May, with five white, broadly ovate petals and ten stamens. The fruit is a small, spherical capsule that splits when ripe. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as in mainland China. It is often found in areas of serpentine and limestone.

丘や山地によく見られるバラ科の落葉低木(イラスト)。幹は灰白色になり,叢生(そうせい)して,よく枝分れをし,高さは1m以下。葉は卵形で,先は長くとがり,ふちは浅くまたは中ほどまで裂け,両面とも軟らかい毛がある。花は,5月ごろに,総状花序をなして咲き,花弁は5枚で,白く広卵形,おしべは10本。果実は袋果で小さくて球形,熟すると裂ける。北海道から九州まで,また中国大陸にも分布する。蛇紋岩や石灰岩地帯に多く見られる。
