This biennial plant of the Primulaceae family is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. It is commonly found on the coasts of Japan. The stem is reddish, splits into several at the base, and grows to a height of about 40 cm. The leaves are alternate, thick, fleshy, spatula-shaped, and 2-6 cm long. In early summer, long racemes grow at the ends of the branches and produce dense white flowers. The calyx is deeply lobed into 5 parts, the lobes are broad lanceolate, the corolla is deeply lobed into 5 parts, and the flower diameter is about 1 cm. The fruit is a hard, spherical capsule about 5 mm in diameter.
