Assisi (English spelling)

Japanese: アッシジ(英語表記)Assisi
Assisi (English spelling)
A city in the province of Perugia in Umbria, central Italy. It is the birthplace of St. Francis and the headquarters of the Franciscan Order. It was an ancient Umbrian, Etruscan and Roman town, and the Temple of Minerva from that time remains as a basilica. In the early Middle Ages it was part of the Duchy of Spoleto, but in the 12th century it became an autonomous city, and later became a Papal State. The town is surrounded by walls, with narrow, winding streets. It contains the Romanesque-Gothic style San Francesco Basilica and monastery (13th century), where St. Francis is buried, decorated with frescoes by Giotto and P. Lorenzetti. There are many ruins related to the saint, such as the Basilica of San Damiano and the tomb and monastery of San Chiara (Clara). In 2000, these buildings were registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Sites as the Basilica of San Francesco and other Franciscan Monasteries. The town's economy depends on pilgrimages and tourism. Population: 24,088 (1991 estimate).
