Japanese: キバチ(樹蜂) - キバチ（英語表記）horntail

A general term for insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera, family Siricidae. Adults appear from May to October. They are roughly cylindrical and elongated, with females having a single thick thorn at the end of their tail and a long, strong ovipositor. Females insert this ovipositor deep into wood to lay eggs. They are said to cause great damage by planting spores of wood-decaying fungi in the wood along with the eggs. Although generally known as a serious pest in forestry, they can also damage garden trees and sometimes perforate lead pipes, causing secondary damage to telecommunications businesses.

膜翅目キバチ科Siricidaeに属する昆虫の総称で，成虫は5～10月に出現する。ほぼ円筒形で細長く，雌の尾端に太い1本のとげがあり，強固な長い産卵管をもつ。雌はこの産卵管を木の中に深く刺し込んで産卵する。このとき，木材腐朽菌の胞子を卵とともに材中に植えつけるので大きな害を与えるといわれている。一般に林業の重要害虫として知られているが，庭園樹を加害することもあり，ときには鉛管を穿孔（せんこう）して通信事業に二次的な被害を与えることもある。
