[Origin of the name and history]
When homesteaders began to settle in the 1870s, the name Hollywood did not yet exist. In 1886, real estate agents Horace H. Wilcox and his wife retired to a large farm here. They named the farm "holly wood," or "Hollywood," after a friend's summer home in Chicago, even though holly does not grow in California. (The Japanese translation of Hollywood as "sacred forest" was apparently a mistranslation that confused holly and holy, but interestingly, Marcel L'Herbier translated Hollywood as Bois Sacré (sacred forest) in France.) In 1891, the Wilcoxes began to divide the land on their farm.

　1870年代に自作農場入植者たちが定住しはじめたころはまだハリウッドという名称はなく，86年にこの地の大きな農場へ隠退したカンザス･シティの不動産業者ホレス･H.ウィルコックス夫妻が，カリフォルニアではholly(セイヨウヒイラギ)が育たないにもかかわらず，シカゴにいる友人の別荘の名まえをかりて農場を〈ひいらぎ(holly)の森(wood)〉，すなわち〈ハリウッド〉と名づけたという伝説的な命名の由来がある(ハリウッドを日本語で〈聖林〉と書いたのはhollyとholyを混同した誤訳だったらしいが，おもしろいことに，フランスでもマルセル･レルビエがHollywoodをBois Sacré(聖林)と訳して紹介している)。91年，ウィルコックス夫妻は農場の土地の分割を始める。…
