1849‐1928 A modern Indian Muslim lawyer and thinker. After graduating from Calcutta University, he qualified as a lawyer in England. In 1877, he founded the National Muslim Association, and while persuading Europeans of the superiority of Islam and using modern Western thought, he endeavored to instill confidence in the West among Muslim intellectuals. In 1890, he became a judge of the Calcutta High Court, but from 1904 he settled in England, where he represented the interests of Muslims against Hindus.
