Tunxi - Tunxi

Japanese: 屯渓 - とんけい
Tunxi - Tunxi

A municipal district in Huangshan City in the southern part of Anhui Province, China. It is located upstream of the Xin'an River, a tributary of the Qiantang River. It has a permanent population of 217,637 (2010). It was known as Tunxi Town during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and a city was established in 1949. It was temporarily abolished in 1963 and incorporated into Xiuning County, but became a city again in 1975. It was further incorporated into Huangshan City in 1987 and became a municipal district of that city. Traditionally, it was the economic center of Huangshan City, as it was the junction between shipping on the Xin'an River and land routes in the southern part of the province. Huangshan Tunxi International Airport is located in the northwest of the district, and international flights have been open since 2014. It is a distribution center for tea, bamboo, timber, and other products produced in the mountainous region, and is known as "Tunlu" for its thriving tea industry.
