Charadriiformes, Charadriidae. Total length 15-18cm. Yellow eye ring. Summer plumage (→ plumage) has a white forehead, a black and white band on the head behind it, and a gray-brown back of the head. There is a white spot behind the eye, and the eye line to the ear feathers is black. The throat, neck and belly are also white, but there is a black ring on the neck. The back, shoulders and coverts are gray-brown. The tail is white around the edges, gray-brown in the middle, and black near the tip. The legs are yellow with a slight brownish tinge. In winter plumage, the black parts become brown. Breeding grounds range from the high latitudes of Eurasia and the Himalayas to areas excluding Mongolia, northern Africa, Southeast Asia, and New Guinea. It is a resident bird that lives year-round from India to New Guinea. In other breeding grounds, it is a summer bird (→ migratory bird), and winters in the Mediterranean coast to central Africa, southeastern China, Taiwan, etc. In Japan, they nest in sandy or gravelly areas such as riverbanks and sandbars in the Kyushu region and north.
