This refers to seaweed that drifts on the ocean's surface, most of which is of the Sargassum species. Seaweed that grows on the coast is torn off by strong waves and gathers at the tide line, forming clumps that continue to grow and move with the ocean currents. Just like seaweed beds, small animals and fish gather on floating seaweed, forming a biological community. Flying fish, pacific saury, and halfbeaks use floating seaweed to spawn. Yellowtail, the most widely produced farmed fish, is cultivated by catching wild young fish called mojako that lie beneath the floating seaweed, and the amount and movement of floating seaweed greatly affects this fishery.
