…Ross spent two winters in Boothia Gulf, west of Baffin Island, from 1829 to 1833. His nephew and first officer, James Clark Ross (1800-1862, later discovered the Ross Sea in Antarctica), was an expert on geomagnetism and discovered the North Magnetic Pole (69.5°N, 95°W) in 1831. In 1845, John Franklin (1786-1847) of England set out from the River Thames with two ships, the Erebus Terror, of the Admiralty, and 134 men to discover the Northwest Passage. This also served as a test of a propeller-propelled ship with an auxiliary steam engine in ice. …
