One of the top life insurance companies in the United States. Headquartered in New York. Founded in New York in 1868 as a spin-off of the life insurance division of National Travelers Insurance Co. (established in 1866). In 1879, it became a company specializing in postal life insurance, expanding its market in the field of small monthly premium insurance for workers, and by the end of the 19th century had surpassed the earlier Prudential Insurance Company. After merging with People's Industrial Life Insurance Company in 1993, it integrated life insurance companies around the country, and by 1909 it had become the industry leader.

アメリカのトップクラスの生命保険会社。本社ニューヨーク。1868年，ニューヨークでナショナル･トラベラーズ保険会社National Travelers Insurance Co.(1866設立)の生命保険部門を分離する形で設立された。79年に簡易生命保険専門会社となり，月掛け型の労働者向け小口保険の分野で市場を拡大，19世紀末には先発のプルーデンシャル保険会社をしのぐに至った。また93年にピープルズ･インダストリアル生命保険会社を合併して以降，各地の生命保険会社を統合，1909年には業界トップとなった。
