A gland that an animal has that secretes a liquid with a strong smell. Also called scent glands or stench glands, it is a specialized sebaceous gland. It is found in vertebrates and invertebrates, the former being multicellular glands and the latter being unicellular glands. In mammals, there are the parotid glands, interdigital glands, metatarsal glands, and inguinal glands in deer, antelopes, and anal glands in dogs and cats, the perineal sac in civet cats, and the preputial sac in civet cats and beavers. They are mainly used to mark territory and attract the opposite sex, but some, such as the anal glands of skunks, use them for self-defense by releasing a liquid. In insects, they are found in stink bugs (Japanese pond turtles), earwigs, and German cockroaches.
