A circle of poets, artists, and scholars that gathered around George in Germany in the early 1890s. George was soon regarded as their spiritual leader, and in 1892 he founded the magazine Blätter für die Kunst, which aimed for a new sense of spiritual art, thus solidifying the foundations of the George School (published until 1919). Participants included Hofmannsthal, Paul Gérardy, F. Gundolph, and L. Klages. The school was a closed elite group, but internally it was open to the literary and artistic ideas of the time, and was a melting pot of originality and debate.
