Art historian and art critic. Born in Ogaki, Gifu Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Aesthetics and Art History, Faculty of Literature, Tokyo Imperial University in 1930 (Showa 5), he studied in Germany from 1936 to 1932. While attending the old Mito High School, he founded the literary coterie magazine "They Themselves" with Seiichi Funahashi and others, and initially studied modern Japanese literature, writing "History of Modern Japanese Literature Criticism" (1936), but later turned to art research, studying German, Dutch, and modern Japanese art. In 1968 (Showa 43), he received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for "Germen of the German Renaissance." He served as director of the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art from 1965, and received the Kikuchi Kan Prize (1973) and the Mainichi Art Award in 1978 for his achievements in exhibition activities. He died in Kamakura.
