Located on New Zealand's North Island, this is the country's longest river. It is 425 km long. It originates at Mount Ruapehu in the center of the North Island, passes through Lake Taupo and Hamilton, and empties into the Tasman Sea south of Auckland. There are eight hydroelectric power stations in the upper and middle reaches, a series of dams and artificial lakes, and two geothermal power stations, making it an important power generation area. The lower reaches were mostly marshes, but land improvement has made it a dairy farming area. The name comes from the Maori language.
