French painter. Born in Montpellier, he studied at the Picot studio of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He won the Prix de Rome in 1845. He also painted portraits, but gained fame for his mythological nudes such as "Venus," which received numerous commissions from Napoleon III and other countries, making him a leading painter of the official exhibition school during the Second Empire. He became a member of the Academie in 1863. He later led Academism as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and a judge for official exhibitions. His work was characterized by clear details and an emphasis on classical contours, and was opposed to the avant-garde of the time, namely Impressionism. He left decorative murals in many mansions in Paris, and painted "The Life of Saint Louis" for the Pantheon.
