Cheb - Chep (English spelling)

A historic city on the banks of the Ože River, at the westernmost tip of the Bohemia region of the Czech Republic, near the border with Germany. Population 33,028 (2001). Founded in the 13th century by German colonists from the East, it maintained its autonomy as a city until the 18th century. A square surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance architecture from the 14th and 15th centuries is well preserved, and a house with a Rococo façade (called a Špalíček) is particularly famous. There is also Cheb Castle, which has a 12th century Romanesque chapel and fortress, and Cheb Museum. Industries include machinery, textiles such as cotton and flax, beer brewing, and leather. It is also a representative city of Bohemia in the Euroregio Egretsis (interregional cooperation between Bohemia, Saxony, and Bavaria). Wallenstein, a Bohemian mercenary commander who played an active role in the Thirty Years' War, was assassinated here in 1634.
