A leader of the Nestorian Church from about 420 to about 490. His Greek name was Barsoumas. He worked hard to expand the Nestorian Church into Persian territory. He was a disciple of Edessa Bishop Ibas (reigned 435-457). He was expelled at the Robber Council of Ephesus (449) and fled to Persia. He became metropolitan of Nisibis (now Nusaybin, Turkey) and opened a Nestorian seminary. He was favored by the Persian king Peroz and had him suppress the Monophysites. The seminary in Nisibis also accepted teachers from the closed Edessa seminary, and later became a gateway for transmitting Greek learning to Arabs.
