Economic welfare
"Welfare" refers to human happiness or well-being, and economic welfare in particular means welfare from an economic perspective. According to AC Pigou, economic welfare is the sum of the utility of each individual in society. However, since the sum of utility cannot be directly dealt with, he considered national income as its equivalent. He concluded that (1) the higher the national income, (2) the larger the share of national income received by the poor, and (3) the smaller the fluctuation in national income, the greater the economic welfare.

〈厚生〉とは人間の幸福もしくは福祉を指すのであるが,とくに経済厚生とは経済的観点からみた厚生を意味する。A.C.ピグーによれば,この経済厚生とは社会を構成する各個人の効用の総和である。しかし,効用の総和を直接に取り扱うことはできないから,彼はそれに対応するものとして国民所得を考えた。そして,(1)国民所得が大きいほど,(2)貧者の受けとる国民所得の分が大きいほど,(3)国民所得の変動が少ないほど,経済厚生は大きいと結論する。
