Saint Bernard (English)
The name of the Great St. Bernard Col (2,469m) on the border between Switzerland and Italy, and the Petit St. Bernard Col (2,188m) on the border between France and Italy, in the western part of the Alps. It is named after a saint of the same name. The Great St. Bernard Col is a route across the Alps that has been used since pre-Roman times. At the top of the pass is a monastery built in the 10th century as a first aid station for travelers. The St. Bernard, famous as a rescue dog, was bred here.
