In 738 (Kaiyuan 26), Emperor Xuanzong ordered the construction of one Buddhist temple and one Taoist temple in each capital and state, naming them Kaiyuan Temple and Kaiyuan Temple after the era names. They were modeled after the Dayunjing Temple built by Empress Wu Zetian, and Japanese provincial temples were modeled after these. …
