A waxy substance refined from geothermal wax found in petroleum deposits, coal deposits, etc. Melting point 60-80°C, specific gravity 0.915-0.925. Usually slightly yellowish, it becomes white and odorless when refined. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol, benzene and other organic solvents. It dissolves in oils and fats, petroleum, paraffin wax, resins, etc. Its acid value, saponification value, and iodine value are 0. It is used as a polishing agent for insulators, candles, sealing wax, leather cream, etc. [Uchida Yasuzo]

石油鉱床，石炭鉱床などで産出される地蠟（ちろう）を精製した蠟状の物質。融点60～80℃，比重0.915～0.925。ふつうわずかに黄色みを帯びるが，精製すると白色の無臭物となる。水に不溶，アルコール，ベンゼンなどの有機溶媒に可溶である。油脂類，石油類，パラフィン蠟，樹脂などと溶けあう。酸価，ケン化価，ヨウ素価は0。絶縁体，ろうそく，封蠟，皮革クリームなどのつや出し剤として利用される。【内田安三】
