Tainoura

Japanese:
Tainoura

This is a coastline in Uchiura Bay, Kamogawa City, Sotobo Coast, southern Chiba Prefecture. Also called Taenoura, the shallow waters are 10 to 15 meters deep and have a wide reef, providing ideal conditions for sea bream to live. There is a legend that sea bream jumped out when Nichiren Shonin was born, and that sea bream gathered when Nichiren wrote a mantra on the sea from a boat. It is said that sea bream came to live in large numbers because food was given to sea bream in this area where killing is prohibited. It was designated a national natural monument in 1936 (Showa 11) as the "Tainoura Sea Bream Habitat", and in 1967 (Showa 42) the designated area was expanded to include the surrounding forests, and it was also elevated to a special natural monument at the same time. A tourist settlement has formed in front of the gate of Tanjoji Temple, which has a connection to Nichiren, and it serves as a base on the tourist route of Minami Boso Quasi-National Park.
