A biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family. A new vegetable created in Japan by interspecific hybridization between Chinese cabbage and cabbage, named after the "Haku" (Chinese cabbage) and "Ran" (Chinese cabbage). Chinese cabbage has 20 chromosomes in its somatic cells (diploid), while cabbage has 18, and the chromosome sets are named the A and C genomes. It was created by breeding a tetraploid plant with 38 somatic chromosomes (genome structure AACC ) from a cross between tetraploids that doubled the chromosome number of these two species.

アブラナ科の一･二年草。ハクサイとキャベツとの種間交雑により日本で作り出された新しい野菜で，ハクサイ(白菜)の〈ハク〉とキャベツ(甘藍)の〈ラン〉をとって命名された。ハクサイは体細胞(二倍体)の染色体数20本，キャベツは18本で，その染色体セットはAおよびCゲノムと名づけられている。この両種の染色体数を倍加した四倍体間の交配から，38本の体細胞染色体(ゲノム構成はAACC)を有する複々倍体植物を育成することによって作出されたものである。
