Ancient Greek painter. Active in Athens in the second half of the 5th century BCE. According to Pliny, he reformed the traditional linear depiction and developed a method of shading using a mixture of colors, making a very important contribution to the development of Greek painting. For this reason, he is called skiagraphos, or "painter of shadows." Although no of his works remain, ancient documents show that his works include "Odysseus" and "The Praying Priest."
