…In the Edo period, these inns were used to accommodate those who came to the capital for lawsuits or trials. They were also called "kujijin-yado" (official officials' inns). The inns' owners and gentei were officially authorized to assist in litigation and played a role similar to that of professional lawyers. The official name of the inns in Edo was "Edo-yado" (official officials' inns). The three associations of Bakuro-cho Kodenmacho-gumi Riyojin-yado, Hachiju-ni-ken-gumi Farmers' inns, and Sanju-ken-gumi Farmers' inns formed a stock association. They were entrusted with delivering sashigami (summons to government offices), and were responsible for those who were kept in the inns (detained at the inns, also called kiminmi-suji or shuiri-suji), and were also required to rush to the council chambers and magistrate's offices in case of fire. …
