Russian author. Born into a farming family in the Vologda region of northern Russia, he began his career as an author in 1961 with a collection of poems and a novella, Belzhaikh. In 1967, he attracted attention with his novella, It's the Way It Is, which depicts the simple daily life of a kolkhoz, centering on the good and ordinary farmer Ivan Afrikanovich and his wife. He has written many other excellent novellas and short stories, all of which are characterized by their beautiful depictions of the nature of his hometown and their depictions of the innermost feelings of the people who live there.

ロシアの作家。北ロシアのボログダ地方の農家に生まれ，1961年に詩集と中編小説《ベルジャイカ村》で作家として出発した。67年に，善良で平凡な農民イワン･アフリカーノビチとその妻を中心にコルホーズの日常を飾りけなく描いた中編《いつものことさ》を発表して注目された。その他にも多くのすぐれた中･短編があるが，いずれも故郷の自然の美しい描写をまじえ，そこに住む人びとの心のひだを描き分けている点に特徴がある。
