Kenzo Okada
Born: September 28, 1902 in Yokohama
[Died] July 25, 1982. Tokyo Western-style painter. Enrolled in Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1922, dropped out in 1924 and traveled to France. Became friends with Tsuguharu Foujita. Returned to Japan in 1927, exhibited at the Nikaten Exhibition from 1929, and became a member of the Nikakai in 1937. Traveled to the United States in 1950 and held several solo exhibitions, where his elegant colors, which combined abstract expressions with a Japanese sensibility, were highly praised in the United States. He continued to win awards at the Venice Biennale (1958) and the Dan International Exhibition (1963), and gained international acclaim. In 1967 he was awarded the Mainichi Art Award. In 1960 he gained American citizenship and lived in New York. He produced works with free color compositions and advocated Eugenism (mysterious thought). Major works include "Genroku" (1957, National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) and "Fly" (1958).

洋画家。 1922年東京美術学校入学,24年中退し,渡仏。藤田嗣治と交友。 27年帰国,29年から二科展に出品し,37年二科会会員。 50年渡米して数回個展を開き,抽象的な表現のなかに日本的感性をたたえた優雅な色感がアメリカで高く評価された。以後ベネチア・ビエンナーレ (1958) ,ダン国際展 (63) などで受賞を続け,国際的な評価を得た。 67年毎日芸術賞を受賞。 60年アメリカ合衆国の市民権を得てニューヨークに在住。自由な色面構成による作品を制作し,ユーゲニズム (幽玄主義) を提唱した。主要作品『元禄』 (57,東京国立近代美術館) ,『とぶ』 (58) 。
