In the 1951 elections, the conservative Mauritanian Progressive Union won a majority. In 1956, due to the rise of the independence movement, France established an executive branch elected by the local parliament, and Moktar Ould Daddah, a lawyer, was chosen as Deputy Prime Minister (the French High Commissioner also served as Prime Minister). In 1958, Mauritania became an autonomous republic in the French Community, and on November 28, 1960, it declared independence. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Moktar Ould Daddah" is listed below.
