Pediastrum (medal algae) - Pediastrum (English spelling)

Japanese: クンショウモ(勲章藻) - クンショウモ(英語表記)Pediastrum
Pediastrum (medal algae) - Pediastrum (English spelling)
A freshwater algae belonging to the family Polytrichum, order Chlorococcales. Many species are known, but all of them live as plankton in lakes, marshes, and ponds. A colony is made up of 4 to 64, and occasionally 128, cells gathered in a flat shape. The diameter of the cells is at most 20 μm, and the colony is also a very small algae with a diameter of no more than 200 μm. Each cell is concave on one side, and the surrounding cells often have projections. When individual cells divide, the colony dissolves and each becomes a new colony. The name "Polytrichum" comes from the shape of the colony.
