A goddess worshipped in the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. She was the wife of the male god Ptah (god of the arts) and was considered one of the three gods of Memphis along with her son Nefertem. Sekhmet was depicted as a female lion and was said to represent plague, the strong rays of the sun, drought, etc., and was feared as a god who would help destroy humanity.
