Fumigation - Kunjo (English spelling) fumigation

Japanese: 薫蒸 - くんじょう（英語表記）fumigation

A method of exterminating harmful organisms by turning a chemical into a gas in an enclosed space and holding it for a certain period of time. It is primarily used to exterminate stored grain pests that breed in stored grains and products, but is also used to exterminate pests in fruit, tobacco leaves, and wood, as well as to sterilize grains and spices, and to disinfect soil. Fumigants dispensed in a warehouse gradually evaporate into gas, which gradually diffuses throughout the warehouse and spreads throughout the warehouse. As the gas concentration increases, it penetrates into the narrow gaps in the grain, but some of the gas that penetrates is sorbed onto the surface of the grain, and the rest penetrates deeper.

密閉空間で薬剤をガス状態にして一定時間保持し，有害生物を駆除する方法。主として貯蔵穀物ならびに製品に繁殖する貯穀害虫類の駆除に使われるが，果実，葉タバコ，木材の害虫駆除，穀物，香辛料の殺菌，土壌消毒などにも使われる。倉庫内に投薬された薫蒸剤は徐々に気化してガスとなり，ガスは倉庫内にしだいに拡散し，倉庫全体に広がる。ガス濃度が高まると，ガスは穀物の狭い間隙（かんげき）中に浸透していくが，浸透したガスの一部は穀物の表面に収着されてしまい，残りがより深く浸透していく。
