A beautiful red seaweed (illustration) that grows below the low tide line along the coasts of Japan, except for the cold waters of Hokkaido and the warm waters of the Nansei Islands. It belongs to the family Rhodophyceae, Brachycephala. Its body is cylindrical, 2-3 mm in diameter, soft and contains a lot of mucilage. It branches out repeatedly like a fork, spreading out like a fan, and reaches a height of 10-20 cm. It is also found on the Korean Peninsula. It can be distinguished from the similar seaweed Pseudogloiophloea okamurai (Setchell) Chihara by its thin body, 1-2 mm in diameter, little mucilage, and cartilage.
