A term of Chinese and Japanese music theory. In China, it refers to the six even-numbered ritsu among the twelve ritsu that were considered to have negative meanings. As opposed to positive ritsu. In Japan, it means one of the scales of gagaku and shomyo, and originally referred to the standard five- or seven-tone scale produced by the sanbun-sen-ho method. In modern gagaku, what was once called hanrohanritsu is called ryousen, and is contrasted with ritsu-sen. In shomyo, a piece that is considered to be made on the ro scale is called ryoukyoku, and is contrasted with ritsukyoku and chukyoku. In early modern Japanese music, the lower of two notes that are an octave apart is called ryou. This ryou is also called oto, and in this case the antonym is jiao (kan or gan), not ritsu. Also, any low range is called ryou. As opposed to jiao (gan). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
