Toleration Act

Toleration Act

This law was enacted in England in May 1689, immediately after the Glorious Revolution, and allowed Protestant nonconformists freedom of religion. It stipulated that Protestants who disagreed with the Church of England would not be punished if they swore allegiance to the King and declared that they did not support the doctrine of transubstantiation, which is the basis of Catholic doctrine, and that they would not be guilty of holding their own meetings if they completed the required registration. As a result, although some aspects of discrimination against nonconformists remained, the treatment of Puritans, one of the greatest problems facing the British state, was resolved by allowing them to exist outside the Church of England. However, Catholics and those who believed against the Trinity were excluded from the scope of tolerance.
