Aichi Prefecture is a city located in the northwest of the prefecture, on the Nobi Plain. Its west borders Gifu Prefecture across the Kiso River. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. Konomiya is home to Ookunitama Shrine, and was once the center of Owari, where the provincial capital was located. The city center developed as a post town on the Mino Road, a side road along the Tokaido Highway in the early modern period. It is served by the Tokaido Main Line, Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, and Bisai Line, and in addition to the traditional textile industry, industries such as machinery and plastic products are growing. Development of the former JR freight yard is also being considered. It is a major producer of seedlings and vegetables, and a prefectural tree center was opened in 1986. It is also rapidly becoming a satellite city of Nagoya City. In April 2005, Nakajima County's Sobue Town and Heiwa Town were incorporated. Area: 79.35 km2 . Population: 136,442 (2010).
