Influenced by translations of the Bible and other texts, original Russian literary works began to appear from the 11th century. The oldest translation that remains as a document is the Ostromir Gospel (1056-57). The period from the mid-11th century to the end of the 17th century, about 650 years ago, is conventionally referred to as "Ancient Russian Literature."
