Abo Pass - Abo Pass

A pass on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures. The only year-round toll highway across the Northern Alps (Awa Pass Road) passes under the pass. It is located at the saddle between Mt. Yake and Mt. Awa, towering in the west of Kamikochi, and is 1,812 meters above sea level. Until the early modern period, this was a route for transporting seafood from Ecchu (Toyama prefecture) to Shinano (Nagano prefecture), and the road was located south of the summit of Mt. Awa. In 1938 (Showa 13), a road was built on the north side, and in 1965 it was designated as National Route 158. A stone statue of Jizo is enshrined at the pass, and there is a tea shop. The autumn leaves are spectacular, with views of the Hotaka mountain range to the northeast, and a gorge several hundred meters below on the Nagano side. The Nagano side has many twists and turns and is closed to traffic from late November to late April, so the Awa Pass Road was built as a shortcut through a tunnel. From a tourist perspective, the pass offers great views. There are two hot springs, Nakanoyu on the Nagano side and Hirayu on the Gifu side.

長野・岐阜県境にある峠。通年通行できる唯一の北アルプス横断有料自動車道（安房峠道路）が峠の下をくぐる。上高地(かみこうち)の西部にそびえる焼岳(やけだけ)と安房山の鞍部(あんぶ)にあり、標高1812メートル。近世までは越中(えっちゅう)（富山県）の海産物を信濃(しなの)（長野県）に搬入するルートであり、道は安房山頂の南にあったが、1938年（昭和13）車道が北側につくられ、1965年に国道158号に指定された。峠には地蔵の石像が祀(まつ)られ、茶店がある。紅葉は絶景で、北東に穂高(ほたか)の連峰を望み、長野県側の眼下は数百メートルの峡谷をなす。長野県側は曲折が多く11月下旬から4月下旬までは通行止めになるため、トンネルで抜けるショートカットの安房峠道路ができた。観光的にはすばらしい眺望の峠である。峠の長野県側に中ノ湯、岐阜県側に平湯(ひらゆ)の両温泉がある。
