...As a result of being liberated from academic classicism, in the 1980s national characteristics developed and socially significant works were produced. It was a group with no unified technique or ideology, and consisted of several dozen diverse painters such as Perov, who satirized Russian customs, Isaak Il'ich Levitan (1860-1900), who had a love for Russian landscapes, Repin, who painted historical pictures, and Surikov, many of whom were from the serf class. Critic Vladimir Vasil'evich Stasov (1824-1906) and collector Pavel Mikhailovich Tret'yakov (1832-98) were strong supporters of the Itinerant Exhibitionists. ...
