Art of the Kashmir region in the Himalayan mountain range in northwest India. It had close ties with central India, Gandhara, Tibet, and Central Asia, and its deep valleys preserved a unique culture for a long time. At Harwan, 11 km north-northeast of Srinagar, there is the site of a Buddhist temple consisting of stone towers, shrines, and monasteries, which is thought to have existed for several centuries since the Kushan period. The courtyard of the shrine was paved with elaborate unglazed clay tiles with bas-reliefs of plants, animals, and people. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
