An old city in the southeastern part of Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1934. It is made up of a plateau and the surrounding lowlands. The central city developed as a post town on the Nakasendo road, and the prefectural office was established there in 1876, which led to rapid development. The city is connected to the Tohoku Main Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, Musashino Line, Saikyo Line, Saitama Rapid Railway Line, Tohoku Expressway, and Tokyo Outer Ring Expressway. Since it sustained little damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, many people moved there from Tokyo, and after World War II, many companies moved there in the 1950s and 1960s, and the population increased rapidly, making it a satellite city of Tokyo, with many commuters. As housing development progresses, some companies have moved out, but food, machinery, chemical, and other industries are active. Lotus root, water chestnut, and seedlings are specialty products in rural areas. There are the National Saitama University, Tajimagahara, where primroses grow, Japan's oldest lock-type canal, and Minuma Tsusenbori (historic site). In May 2001, it merged with Omiya City and Yono City to form Saitama City. Area: 70.67 km2 . Population: 484,834 (2000). →Related topics Urawa [ward] | Sakura [ward] | Midori [ward] | Minami [ward] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
