A general term for birds in the Diomedeidae family of petrels, or refers to one of these species. All birds in this family are huge, oceanic seabirds with amazing flying abilities. Their wings are remarkably long and thin. They fly like gliders, using the wind near the ocean surface with their wings outstretched. Their tails are short or slightly long, and their legs are short with webbed toes. Their beaks are large and strong, with a hook-like curve at the tip. They are almost unable to dive, instead floating on the ocean surface and catching squid, fish, krill, and other large plankton that rise to the surface with their beaks.

ミズナギドリ目アホウドリ科Diomedeidaeの鳥の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この科の鳥は，みなすばらしい飛翔力をもった巨大な外洋性の海鳥である。翼は著しく長く細い。その翼をのばしたまま，海面近くの風を利用してグライダーのように飛ぶ。尾は短いかやや長い程度で，脚は短く，あしゆびには水かきがある。くちばしは大きくがんじょうで，先端はかぎ状に曲がりとがっている。潜水はほとんどできず，海面に浮いていて，表層に浮上してきたイカ類，魚類，オキアミなどの大型プランクトンをくちばしでつかみとる。
