1891‐1985 Italian novelist. He studied literature at the university in his native Bologna where Carducci and Pascoli taught, and showed a precocious talent. In 1919, he founded the magazine Ronda with Cardarelli and Cecchi, and was the only one of them to choose novels as a career. With a highly cultured, moralistic and macroscopic view of history as his backbone, he used a refined writing style and took a balanced conservative stance as a literary figure. His representative works are The Devils of Pontelungo (1927), which depicts the failure of the revolutionary movement of Bakunin and other anarchists in Italy, and The Mill on the Po (1938-40), a trilogy of historical epics set in a watermill near Ferrara, which overlaps the changes in one family over the course of a century with the movements of modern Italy.
