Six Dynasties

Japanese: 六朝 - りくちょう

[1] A general term for the six dynasties ( 222-589 ) that arose in the Yangtze River basin and had their capital in Jiankang (= Jianye, Nanjing) in China from the fall of the Later Han to the unification of the Sui. It refers to the Three Kingdoms of Wu, the Jin (Eastern Jin) after the migration to the South, and the four Southern Dynasties (Song, Qi, Liang, and Chen). [Yunbu Seye (1548)] [Yin Yao Fan - Jinling Shang Li Gong Chui Si Lang Shi] [2] A style of calligraphy practiced during the Six Dynasties period. Originally it referred to the calligraphy of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi of the Southern Dynasties, but later, when modern calligraphy of the Northern Dynasties began to flourish during the Qing Dynasty, it also came to be called the Six Dynasties.

[1] 中国で、後漢の滅亡から隋の統一まで、揚子江流域におこり建康（=建業・南京）に都した六つの王朝（二二二‐五八九年）の総称。三国の呉、南渡後の晉（東晉）と南北朝の南朝四王朝（宋・斉・梁・陳）をさす。〔運歩色葉（1548）〕〔殷堯藩‐金陵上李公垂侍郎詩〕[2] 六朝時代に行なわれた書風。もと南朝の王羲之、王献之の書道をさしたが、のち、清朝のころ北朝の近代的書道が興隆しだすとこれをも六朝とよぶようになった。
