1869‐1946 A gypsum craftsman and leader of the Spanish Socialist Party. Born in Madrid. In 1890, he joined the Socialist Party-affiliated labor union, the General Confederation of Workers. Due to his skills during his time in the labor union, he became the right-hand man of the party's founder, P. Iglesias, when he joined the Socialist Party (1894). He was the leader of the radical wing within the party and led the general strike of 1917. He was imprisoned for this, but was pardoned and released the following year. After the collapse of the military dictatorship (1923-30), he launched an anti-monarchy movement, and around this time he became close to the Soviet Union. In April 1931, he was appointed Minister of Labor in the Provisional Government of the Second Republic, and became a member of parliament the same year, but he led the Asturian Revolution (1934) and was imprisoned again (until 1936).
