A large annual plant of the Polygonaceae family (APG classification: Polygonaceae). It is covered with white soft hairs. The stem is erect and well-branched, reaching a height of 2 meters. The leaves are alternate, 10-20 cm long, 7-15 cm wide, broadly ovate with a sharp tip, heart-shaped at the base, and long stalks. The sheaths are tubular, membranous, hairy, and green at the edges. They flower from August to October, with dense spikes at the end of each branch, and hang down. The perianth is red, has 5 lobes, and is 3.5 mm long. The achene is oblate, about 3 mm long, and not shiny. Native to Southeast Asia, it is cultivated for ornamental purposes in Japan. The leaves are said to have the effect of neutralizing the poison of vipers, hence the name Habute Cobra. [Junko Kobayashi December 11, 2020] The leaves are broadly ovate with a heart-shaped base.
