18th century German composer. He is important as the author of the performance theory book "Essay on Flute Playing" (1752). Born on January 30th in Oberschöden. After training as a town musician, he went to Vienna in 1717 and studied counterpoint under Zelenka and Fuchs. In 1718 he became an oboist in Dresden and Warsaw, and after studying under Bufardin, the greatest flute player of the time, he also became a flute player. After traveling to Italy, Paris, and London from 1724 to 1727, he returned to Dresden, but in 1728 he met Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia (later Frederick the Great), and in 1741 when Frederick became king, he was invited to Potsdam as a court composer. He wrote about 300 concertos and about 200 chamber music pieces for the flute, which the great king loved, and died there on July 12th, 1773.

18世紀ドイツの作曲家。演奏理論書『フルート奏法試論』(1752)の著者として重要。1月30日、オーバーシェーデンに生まれる。町楽師の修業後、1717年ウィーンに赴き、ゼレンカとフックスのもとで対位法を学ぶ。18年ドレスデンとワルシャワでオーボエ奏者となり、当時最大のフルート奏者ビュファルダンに師事後、フルート奏者となった。24~27年イタリア、パリ、ロンドンに旅行後、ドレスデンに戻るが、28年プロイセン皇太子フリードリヒ(後のフリードリヒ大王)に出会い、彼が国王に即位した41年には宮廷作曲家としてポツダムに招聘(しょうへい)された。大王が好んだフルートのために約300曲の協奏曲、約200曲の室内楽曲を書き、73年7月12日同地で没した。
