Teruel - Teruel (English spelling)

Japanese: テルエル - てるえる(英語表記)Teruel
Teruel - Teruel (English spelling)

The capital of Teruel Province in Aragon, central-eastern Spain. Population 31,158 (2001). It is located at an altitude of 915 meters in the basin of the Guadalabial River (the name of the upper Turia River) in the eastern Iberian mountains. It is an old town originating from the Iberian town of Turba, but was destroyed by the Romans and occupied and rebuilt by Muslims in the 8th century. It came under the control of the Kingdom of Aragon in 1171, but many Muslims continued to live there, and Islamic architecture (Mudejar style) can be seen. Many Jews also lived in the Middle Ages, but they were expelled (1486). During the Spanish Civil War, it became a battlefield from December 1937 to February 1938, and historical buildings were destroyed, but the cathedral and St. Martin's Cathedral remain.
