The border defense forces deployed by the Roman Emperor Constantine I (the Great) and his successors consisted of cavalry and infantry, and also worked as garrison soldiers. Although these forces were usually assigned to the defense of specific locations, they sometimes served as mobile units, such as comitatenses (field armies), and it is not correct to define the limitanei as simply local peasant soldiers. However, the comitatenses established by Constantine were the mainstay of the Roman army in the later period of the Roman Empire.
