In Japan, the name kaiko appears in the ancient Wamyō Ruijūshō, but even today in Nubia, the leather is lightly rubbed with bare hands to express the sound of the wind. The southern African drum called moshpiane is said to be played secretly by old women, and has a barrel-like body covered in sheepskin, which is rubbed with a bundle of corn stalks. This drum is said to be played at girls' coming-of-age ceremonies, and is thought to have greater significance as a ritual tool than as a musical instrument. …
